The University of Göttingen, officially the Georg August University of Göttingen, is a public research university in the city of Göttingen, Germany.

Within the framework of the 2006–07 German Universities Excellence Initiative, Göttingen won funding for its future concept “Tradition, Innovation, Autonomy,” its graduate school “Neurosciences and Molecular Biosciences,” and its research cluster “Microscopy at the Nanometer Range.”
In the 2012 Excellence Initiative, Göttingen succeeded in obtaining funds for its graduate school “Neurosciences and Molecular Biosciences” and its research cluster “Microscopy at the Nanometer Range”, but failed in its bid for future concept financing.
