European Union 2021 Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) Competition for Nigerians – Get Up to N500,000 Grants

The Delegation of the European Union to Nigeria and ECOWAS is organising a short video competition on sexual and gender-based violence as a means of eliminating its prevalence in society.

The objective of the competition is to stimulate the awareness of Nigerians on issues of gender-based violence, ensuring that the voices of young people are heard and taken into consideration when shaping and implementing programmes and policies in Nigeria.

Entrants are asked to express what they understand by sexual and gender-based violence and ways to eliminate it in society.  Unleash your creativity in a three-minute video to illustrate the positive changes you would like to see.  Express it with moving pictures using a true-life story or fiction.

Note: You do not need to be a professional filmmaker to be a part of the competition. If you plan to use your mobile phone to shoot the video, please follow the guidelines below:

• Put your phone on air mode to avoid interruptions during recording
• To get steady shots, use a mobile tripod, selfie stick, or hold your phone steadily
• Ensure that you get good audio. Be careful not to block the microphone on your phone with your palm when holding the phone during recording.
• Make sure you have good light

Length of video: maximum of three (3) minutes

Credits: ensure your video has all relevant credits

• Jury review dates: February 1 – February 5, 2021
• Screening: March 8, 2021

Entry Qualification

• Sending an entry implies acceptance of the rules and regulations governing the award.
• Videos can be narrative, story, animated, or experimental and can be entered by professional or amateur video makers.
• Local language videos must be subtitled in the English language. Mixed language videos must have English subtitles.
• No entry/registration fees are charge for the submission of videos.
• All music/soundtrack rights must be cleared before videos are submitted. Consent of performers and/or persons appearing in the videos must be obtained before any video is submitted.
• Entrants grant organizers’ permission to use excerpts for promotional purposes on various media channels.
• The entrant acknowledges and agrees that all matters not covered by these rules and regulations, and questions arising from them, will be decided at the sole discretion of the European Union.

Entries must be accompanied by a minimum of three high-resolution images from the video to be reproduced, published and/or exhibited for promotional purposes as it pertains to the competition.

Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) Short Video Competition Prizes:

There will be ten winners for the overall best videos.

1st Prize =    Video editing desktop

2nd Prize = Video editing laptop 

3rd Prize = DSLR camera

The 7 best runners-up will receive a grant of N500,000 each.

10 best videos will be shown at all gender-based events, with credits to the video owners.

Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) Short Video Competition Selection Process

The jury narrows all submissions down to a shortlist of videos and then decides on the best three, who will receive prizes and recognition. The shortlisted and winning videos are then screened. Winners will be notified before the premiere.

Before submitting your video, please read the following carefully:

Terms & Conditions:

1. This competition is for videos made by Nigerians (individuals or groups) based on their understanding of SGBV and how to mitigate its prevalence in society.
2. Videos must be three (3) minutes or under to be accepted in the competition.
3. The videos must include English subtitles (unless the spoken language is English).
4. All videos submitted must be .MP4 files with the preferred 1920×1080 resolution.
5. The submitter owns all rights to the video.
6. Copyright clearance of all material, both sound and picture, is the sole responsibility of the submitter.
7. The submitter cannot withdraw the submission after the official selection announcement.
8. Receipt of all entries will be acknowledged. If acknowledgement is not received within 72 hours of submission, please contact 0901 065 5926
9. Permission to use images and excerpts of each submitted video is considered granted upon acceptance into the screenings at the premiere – including trailers/clips on the organizers’ social media channels.
10. By submitting your video to the competition, you agree that if your video is selected for inclusion in our screenings, we have permission to screen it in a cinema during the premiere.
11. There is no limit the number of entries to the competition by an individual or group, provided videos are SGBV themed.
12. The decisions of the Judges are final and no correspondence can be entered into.

Things to Avoid

Please avoid having content in your experimental video as per below:

• Long periods of strobe lights or lights flickering that may make people uncomfortable
• Loud distorted noises, long periods of white noise, sirens or screeching audio
• Excessive profanity in the text or audio (a few words are acceptable)
• Excessive explicit sexual acts that could be considered pornography. Please use good judgement. Rated-R is okay but Rated-X is not.
• Please avoid death threats or depictions of murder aimed at politicians or celebrities.
• Please avoid violent scenes directed at children or animals.

Definition of terms:

Types of Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV)

Physical violence: Any act which causes physical harm as a result of unlawful physical force. Physical violence can take the form of, among others, serious and minor assault, deprivation of liberty and manslaughter.

Sexual violence: Any sexual act performed on an individual without their consent. Sexual violence can take the form of rape or sexual assault.

Psychological violence: Any act which causes psychological harm to an individual. Psychological violence can take the form of, for example, coercion, defamation, verbal insult, or harassment.
