Boko Haram: Presidency Blasts Obasanjo, Says He Must Apologize To Nigerians 9

The federal government has described former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s comments imputing ethno-religious motive to Boko Haram and ISWAP as deeply offensive and patently divisive, saying such indiscreet comments are far below the status of an elder statesman.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday and made available to our newsroom, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said it was particularly tragic that a man who fought to keep Nigeria one is the same one seeking to exploit the country’s fault lines to divide it in the twilight of his life.

He said Boko Haram and ISWAP are terrorist organizations pure and simple, adding that they care little about ethnicity or religion when perpetrating their senseless killings and destruction.

Naija News recalls Chief Obasanjo had earlier made his statement while commenting on the general security situation in the country

”Since the Boko Haram crisis, which has been Simmering under the watch of Obasanjo, boiled over in 2009, the terrorist organization has killed more Muslims than adherents of any other religion, blown up more mosques than any other houses of worship and is not known to have spared any victim on the basis of their ethnicity. It is therefore absurd to say that Boko Haram and its ISWAP variant have as their goal the ‘Fulanisation and Islamisation’ of Nigeria, West Africa or Africa,” Alhaji Mohammed said in the statement.

He said President Buhari put to rest the mischaracterization of Boko Haram as an Islamic organization when he said, in his inaugural speech in 2015, that ”Boko Haram is a mindless, godless group who are as far away from Islam as one can think of”.

The Minister said Obasanjo’s comments are therefore as insensitive and mischievous as they are as offensive and divisive in a multi-ethnic and multi-religious country like Nigeria, wondering whether there is no limit to how far the former President will go in throwing poisonous darts at his perceived political enemies.

He said Obasanjo’s prescriptions for ending the Boko Haram/ISWAP crisis, which include seeking assistance outside the shores of Nigeria, are coming several years late, as President Buhari has done that and more since assuming office, hence the phenomenal success he has recorded in tackling the terrorists.

”Shortly after assuming office in 2015, President Buhari’s first trips outside the country were to rally the support of Nigeria’s neighbours – Benin, Cameroon, Chad and Niger – for the efforts to battle the terrorists.

“The President also rallied the support of the international community, starting with the G7, and then the US, France and the UN.”

”That explains the massive degrading of Boko Haram, which has since lost its capacity to carry out the kind of spectacular attacks for which it became infamous, and the recovery of every inch of captured
Nigerian territory from the terrorists,” Alhaji Mohammed said.

He said Obasanjo’s call for wide consultations with various groups as part of the efforts to tackle the Boko Haram crisis has been neutralized by his ill-advised comments which have served more to
alienate a large number of Nigerians, who are offended by his tactless and distasteful postulation.

The Minister called on the former President, whom he said took bullets for Nigeria’s unity, not to allow personal animosity to override his love for a united Nigeria, saying it will not be out of place if he withdraws his unfortunate statement and apologizes to Nigerians.

Bus Driver Detained for Six Years Wins N10m Against Police

Published

on

The Federal High Court in Lagos on Monday ordered the immediate release of a commercial bus driver, Jones Ofori, who was detained for alleged robbery without trial since 2013.

The court also ordered the police to pay him damages in the sum of N10m for his unlawful detention.

Justice Muslim Hassan, who gave the judgment on Monday, noted that though the defendants filed a counter-affidavit in opposition to the suit, they never served it on the plaintiff.

He said he had no other option but to grant the relief sought by Ofori.

Joined as defendants in the suit are the Federal Government; Attorney General of the Federation; Inspector-General of Police; and the Deputy Controller of Prisons.

In the suit filed on his behalf by his lawyer, Adewale Fadipe, Ofori explained that he was arrested by the police in 2013 after a bus entrusted to him by his employer, one Mr Ikechukwu, went missing from where he parked it overnight in the Ajah area of Lagos.

He said following a complaint to the police, he was first detained for two weeks at the Ajiwe Police Station, Ajah; from where was subsequently transferred to the office of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad in Ikeja, where was further detained for two weeks.

He told the court that he was later charged with robbery before a state’s magistrate’s court after which he was remanded in the prison custody.

He said since being remanded in prison six years ago, he was never tried.

He urged the court to declare that his arrest and detention without trial without violated his fundamental rights.

He prayed the court to award damages against the respondents in his favour.

Justice Hassan, in a judgment on Monday, upheld his prayers and awarded N10m in his favour.

Akwa Ibom Government Earmarks N100m Grant for Accreditation of Polytechnic Courses

Published

on

Gov. Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom, says the state government has earmarked N100 million as grant for the state state-owned polytechnic to begin the process of securing full accreditation for its courses.

According to a statement by Mr Essien Uduese, the Special Adviser on Media to the Governor, Emmanuel said this at the sixth convocation of the polytechnic held at its Ikot Osurua campus in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area of the state.

The governor was quoted to have also expressed delight that the National Board for Technical Education had granted approval to the polytechnic for a few outstanding courses.

He charged the polytechnic authorities to incorporate entrepreneurial development in the institution’s curriculum to facilitate economic advancement in the country.
Emmanuel underscored the need for the institution to ensure quality content and capacity building in all its programmes.

He said: “The rejigging of the curriculum will enable students of the institution to become job creators after graduation rather than job seekers.

“Every single aspect of our development in education should look at entrepreneurship because that is where the next line of action for economic development of any developing country lies.”

The governor said that there was need for a paradigm shift away from the design of African method of education, where people were trained to come out and search for white-collar jobs.

He gave an assurance that his administration would continue to invest in education in order to prepare the Akwa Ibom child for the opportunities and challenges of the 21st century.

He said that the state government was planning an education summit that would help to reshape the sector.

He said that government would soon constitute the Governing Councils for the polytechnic and state-owned university “to put things in the right perspective.”

Emmanuel commended the academic staff of the polytechnic for their commitment in ensuring that graduates of the institution were properly equipped to compete with their counterparts across the globe.

He congratulated the graduands on their achievement and directed the polytechnic to commence annual convocation of graduates.

In an address, the Acting Rector of the polytechnic, Dr. Moses Umobong, said that the institution was vigorously pursuing its mandate in training and research in the Applied Sciences, Technology and other fields to meet the manpower needs of the nation.

Umobong said that the polytechnic authorities had resolved to sustain the prevailing peace in the institution, eliminate divisiveness and rancour and also preserve the enviable status earned over the years.

He thanked the governor for giving the institution the leverage to stand out in academic activities and affiliations with several professional bodies.

Umobong said that no fewer than 400 graduates of the polytechnic had been inducted and granted professional licence to practice by the Nigerian Institute of Science Laboratory Technology (NIISLT).

He attributed the feat to the high standard and quality of training, following a decade of accreditation of its Science Laboratory Technology programmes.

He said that in spite of the recruitment of additional 100 personnel to bring the polytechnic’s staff strength to 640, the institution still needed more manpower for a more efficient service delivery.

He attributed the shortage of staff to the accreditation of more courses, rise in student population, among other factors.
The statement further stated that 9,096 students graduated from various disciplines during the convocation.
