Niger Police kill two armed robbers, foil robbery attack 17

The Police in Niger State have allegedly gunned down two armed robbers at Zuma rock Suleja, Suleja local government in an attempt to foil a robbery attack in the area.

One of the suspects was killed during a gun battle between the Police and the criminal gang of four robbers.

Also, the second suspect was said to have died at a clinic in Madalla, while the other members of the gang escaped.

Confirming the development in Minna, the state Commissioner of Police, CP, Adamu Usman said the incident occurred yesterday when his officers responded to a distress call from people in the area.

According to him, the officers attached to ‘C’ division, Madalla in Suleja engaged the robbers in combat leading to the death of two suspects.

He explained that while the first victim died on the spot during the gun duel, the second one passed on at a Clinic in Madalla, where he was receiving medical attention.

“Our officers engaged some suspected armed robbers in a gun duel at New Gwarinpa via Zuma rock Suleja, in the process, two of the gunmen sustained gunshot injuries and one of them died on the spot.

Anglican Bishop laments Nigeria’s insecurity, calls for overhaul of security architecture

Anglican Bishop laments Nigeria’s insecurity, calls for overhaul of security architecture 18

The Bishop of Anglican Communion, Diocese of Kaduna, Timothy Yahaya, has observed with dismay that insecurity in the country has made life nasty, brutish and short.

He stated that insecurity in the country has reached an alarming dimension that not only needs an emergency stakeholders approach but a total overhaul of Nigeria’s security architecture for a possible solution.

In an address delivered on Friday at the 3rd session of the 21st Synod of the Anglican Church in Kaduna, Bishop Timothy Yahaya noted that presently in the country, it is either Boko Haram, gunmen, banditry, kidnapping, yahoo boys, or herdsmen, stressing that the life of a man has become very cheap.

He appealed for renewed efforts by the government to ensure normalcy returns to the country especially in a situation where citizens die carelessly on a daily basis due to insecurity.

The Bishop called on the Buhari-led government to take proactive measures towards decisively addressing the challenges facing Nigerians with a view to giving Nigerians hope, saying, “In our case, citizens die needlessly on a daily basis and life moves on as if it is normal.”

Speaking on the insecurity in Kaduna State, the cleric observed that the rate of insecurity in the state was alarming, adding that kidnapping, banditry and all kinds of criminality seems to be on the increase.

He asked the Kaduna State government to go back to the drawing board with the state Police Command, the Military, Civil Defence, and other security agencies in a bid to win the war against crime and criminality.

On the Company and Allied Matters Act 2020, the Bishop noted that section 839 (1) and (2) which empowers the commission to suspend trustees of an association (in this case, the Church) and appoint the interim managers to manage the affairs of the association for some given reasons is ill-advised and need critical re-examination.

Cleric to Nigerians: Don’t politicise insecurity

Cleric to Nigerians: Don’t politicise insecurity 19

The Bishop, Diocese of Kaduna Anglican Church, Rt. Rev. Timothy Yahaya, has urged Nigerians to rally together to tackle insecurity, noting that “it is a common enemy that should not be politicised, but rather needs to be handled holistically.”

Yahaya said it was a monster that was everywhere and targeting everybody irrespective of religion, status, sex, race, level of education or political affiliation.

Addressing journalists shortly after delivering the Bishop’s Charge (Presidential Address) at the third Session of the 21st Synod of the Diocese of Kaduna Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) on Friday at the Our Saviour’s Anglican Church Kaduna, with the theme: ‘Peace Be Still’, the cleric lamented the “militarisation of Edo state governorship election,” saying that “it is an eyesore in a democracy.”

He said: “Insecurity is all over the place in our state, we need to handle it holistically. There should never be politicisation of insecurity because nobody benefits from it. We must mobilise and fight against the monster. The kidnappers abduct people without looking at your religion, either you are rich or poor, either you are male or female, either you are educated or illiterate.

“Insecurity is enemy of the society and we need to come together and fight the enemy. To overcome insecurity, we need to get the right intelligence, we should not give it colouration as if it benefits some people and the security agencies need to respond to the matter the right way to give confidence to the people. We need to fight insecurity before it consumes all of us because it would not spare anyone.”

On the Edo election, he said, “How many police have been drafted to Edo state for the elections, how many have been drafted to states facing security challenges? When you militarise an election, are you talking of democracy? Once an election is militarised it means the election has been compromised. Who is afraid of electronic voting?”
